Dorion Loop Trail, Orono
Difficulty: Easy-moderate
Description: This 2.9-mile loop trail on the University of Maine campus travels over fairly even terrain, passing over gentle hills and crossing a few wide bridges.

Jeremiah Colburn Natural Area, Orono
Difficulty: Easy (The trails travel over fairly even terrain. Watch for tree roots and rocks.)
Description: On the land, walkers can enjoy a small trail network (more than a mile of intersecting trails), plus a trail (about 0.7 mile, according to the map) that leads north to Tech Park. Several natural features are marked with simple signs, including the “Big Old Tree,” an enormous white pine that is featured in the Orono Land Trust logo.

Newman and Bangor Hills, Caribou Bog Conservation Area, Orono
Difficulty: Moderate
Description: A loop hike from the parking area to the top of Newman Hill is about 2 miles in total distance, and a loop hike of both Newman and Bangor hills is about 4 miles. This conservation land is great for wildlife watching.

Piney Knoll Conservation Area, Orono
Difficulty: Easy-moderate
Description: Piney Knoll Conservation Area is a 57-acre parcel along the Penobscot River in Orono that features about 4.5 miles of intersecting trails. It’s a popular place for walking, snowshoeing, mountain biking, geocaching and cross-country skiing.

Ben Sklar Wilderness Park, Orono
Difficulty: Easy-moderate
Description: The trail network is made up of about 1.5 miles of wide, well-marked trails. Footing can be tricky in areas due to puddles and uneven, rocky terrain. Ben Sklar Wilderness Park was donated to the Town of Orono in August of 1985 by David Sklar in memory of his father. People in the area often refer to the 47-acre parcel simply as Sklar Park.

Orono Bog Boardwalk, Bangor-Orono
Difficulty: Easy
Description: This boardwalk, along with the 0.25-mile woodland trail leading to it, is handicap accessible and great for walking strollers. The 1-mile boardwalk loop trail begins at the forested wetland edge in the Bangor City Forest and crosses the town line into the University of Maine owned section of the bog in Orono. The path leads to the open center of the bog, an area covered in peat moss, stunted vegetation, and fascinating plants such as the carnivorous pitcher plant.

Buck Hill Conservation Area, Veazie
Difficulty: Easy (The trails of Buck Hill Conservation Area are wide, relatively flat and smooth.)
Description: The 64-acre Buck Hill Conservation Area features a trail network that equals a little less than 2 miles of trails, as well as an interesting American chestnut tree grove.

McPhetres Farm Forest, Veazie
Difficulty: Easy-moderate
Description: Owned by the Town of Veazie, the 25-acre McPhetres Farm Forest contains a network of marked walking trails that are open to the public year round. The quiet property is great for dog walking, trail running and snowshoeing. It’s also a good place for wildlife watching and birding. The trails add up to a little less than 1.5 miles. The forest is fairly hilly, so expect a few short uphill climbs.
